WordPress is an amazing product, and Fantastico Deluxe helps with the install, but there are some issues and best practices.

When installing WP using Fantastico, make sure the permissions are secure after installation.  Fantastico usually sets permissions on the public_html directory to an incorrect “755″.  Make sure they are “750.”

Make sure the wp-config.php file permissions are set to “400.”

I’ve had two sites hacked into soon after installation so this is not just an academic exercise.

Settings

  • Definitely change the permalinks.  I don’t know why they default it with a URL (?p=123) format.  You want smart names for your links. If you are going to add lots of posts, you may want to select the “Month and name” format.  If not, go to custom Structure and put in /%postname%/
  • Under media, you will likely want to uncheck the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders”, unless you will have messloads of images you’ll be uploading.  Definitely check the settings for sizes of images in medium and large.  You will likely want to reduce the large to something like 800 px max.
  • Reading — Unless this is a straight blog, you’ll probably want to create a page called “home” and one called “blog” and then go to the reading panel and set the front page display to static and set the home and blog pages.

  • All in One SEO Pack — Most popular and robust plugin for SEO
  • Google XML Sitemaps — Will keep your sitemaps xml file up to date
  • WP Show IDs — This replaces “Reveal IDs for WP Admin” because it shows ids for custom post types also
  • List category posts — Useful if post categories are used as a taxonomy, and you want to get a list of specific categories.
  • Theme My Login — Creates a nice login page based on the active theme.
  • NextGen Gallery — The best in managing pic galleries
  • Exclude Pages from Navigation — Excludes pages if desired
  • Theme Switcher Reloaded — Great for development, allowing clients to view various themes.
  • Custom Post Type UI — This takes advantage of WP 2.9+ custom post types.
  • Members — This plugin allow the admin to manage roles for different levels of users.
  • White Label CMS –This customized the admin section.  You can minimize to the items you want the user to see.
  • CMS Tree Page View — This will insert a new menu item under page which gives a tree view of the pages.  For sites with lots of pages and subpages, this is a better way to navigate pages in the admin section.
  • Google Analyticator– There are several Google Analytics plugins, but this seems the best, which includes a nice dashboard widget/panel to view analytics from WordPress.
  • Simple CMS — This is a basic plugin that simplifies the admin page for Editors and below.  There is no way to change the settings, but it is a quick way to reduce the clutter for clients.

Directory of Major Malls (DMM) has the premier database of North American shopping centers.

In addition to needing a new website, DMM required a streamlining of the database maintenance process.

FSI teamed with partner GORGES to migrate the current SQL Server database to a Cloud hosting solution, and a data e-commerce platform.

FSI’s broad experience in GIS and marketing made tying DMM’s data with other geographic data (from a partner data provider) simple. These new partnerships allowed DMM to leverage their database to increase sales.

Ener-g-Rotors is an industrial technology start-up, serving clients with manufacturing facilities. The original site was one page with basic information.  The site needs were simple, but the company needed to explain their technology more in greater detail and make periodic edits.

The simple requirements and need for client maintenance was perfect for WordPress.  FSI utilized its custom-template process to quickly find a suitable design the followed their existing branding with the logo and color scheme.

This an example of a site that was built for a little over $1,000.

Accomplishments include:

Economic Development

  • Led development of highly successful, award winning pedestrian mall (one of the first in New York State) to revitalize central business district.  Responsible for all phases of project development and implementation.
  • Directed planning, solicited developers, obtained federal funding and negotiated with banks for construction of several major downtown mixed use projects.
  • Participated in workout with local banks for failed downtown anchor department store.  Obtained federal funding, assisted in attracting tenant and participated in restructuring of private financing.
  • Directed planning, land purchase, funding, construction and leasing of city’s industrial parks.
  • Directed successful commercial revitalization program in secondary commercial area of West State Street, including street/sidewalk improvements and building façade renovation.
  • Directed revitalization of Collegetown (mixed use district adjacent to Cornell University), including financing, siting and design of city-owned parking structure; negotiated financing and design of privately-owned 64-unit apartment building; oversaw plans for street/sidewalk improvements.

Housing and Neighborhood Conservation

  • Instrumental in establishment and operation of Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services, an award-winning nonprofit housing rehabilitation corporation active in city’s low income areas.  Served as board member from inception to present.  Serve as Chair of Executive Committee.  Negotiated funding for INHS through state and federal grants and private sector sources.
  • Directed major zoning ordinance revision to protect residential neighborhoods from conversion of single family homes to multiple occupancy.
  • Persevered in long term struggle to make traffic calming official policy for City.  First $400,000 in traffic calming devices is out to bid as of this writing.

Grants

  • Established an aggressive grants program, making Ithaca a model for successful utilization of state, federal and regional funding programs.

  • Directed staff and participated in a wide variety of other projects and programs including:

Education:  Worked with school district on problems of declining enrollment and under utilization of space.

Health Care: Directed staff and negotiated with physicians, county hospital and regional funding sources to establish health care facility in downtown.  Responsible for funding, design and construction.

Environment:  Supervised drafting of city’s local environmental law, served as “lead agency” in numerous environmental reviews.

Recreation:  Supervised staff work on numerous park, playground, trails and other recreation and open space projects; reviewed designs for construction; secured funding for implementation.  Persistent advocate for trail system connecting City neighborhoods to each other, City parks and surrounding State parks.  Construction of first two sections completed in 2002.  Additional sections under design.

Communications:  Serve as city lead in negotiation for cable television refranchising.

Transportation:  Served as city’s representative and chair of review committee for highly controversial highway project.  Supervised production of city bikeway plan.

Information systems:  Spearheaded creation of City of Ithaca’s GIS.  Supervised and fought for development of system through multi-jurisdictional cooperation.
